Inspire® Therapy

Inspire® is a Unique and Long Term Solution to Treating Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Haven Health Care offers a new long-term sleep apnea treatment option, called Inspire® Therapy.

Inspire works inside your body with your natural breathing process to treat sleep apnea. Mild stimulation keeps your airway open during sleep, allowing oxygen to flow naturally. You use a small handheld remote to turn Inspire on before bed and off when you wake up.

Benefits of Inspire, include:

  • Improved quality of sleep
  • Less snoring
  • More energy during the day
  • Reduced risks for heart problems and other complications associated with sleep apnea

Candidates for Inspire Therapy

Most people with sleep apnea are candidates for Inspire Therapy. However, there are some general requirements:

  • Being at least 18 years old
  • Being unable to tolerate CPAP
  • Having moderate to severe sleep apnea

Some specific medical conditions may make you ineligible for Inspire Therapy. These include:

  • Certain heart conditions
  • Allergies to metals
  • Pregnancy
  • Obesity (BMI > 35)

If you decide to move forward with Inspire, our team will help you prepare for the procedure and develop a personalized treatment plan. To get started, schedule a consultation and sleep study with Haven Health Care in Woodhaven.

Schedule a Consultation

If you choose Inspire Therapy, we’ll help you get ready. During the consultation visit, patients are evaluated for their suitability for the therapy. We’ll set up a detailed session to explain the treatment, gather information about your sleep apnea, which may involve a sleep study, and address any concerns. Our team then drafts a personalized treatment plan, ensuring each patient is well-informed and prepared for the next steps.

How It Works

Inspire Therapy is an implantable device for sleep apnea that uses a small generator to stimulate the tongue’s nerve, keeping the airway open during sleep. It’s implanted under the skin in the chest, requiring no external equipment. Users can adjust stimulation with a remote control for comfort. It’s the only FDA-approved device for moderate to severe sleep apnea and an option for those who can’t tolerate CPAP.

Procedure for Treatment

The Inspire Therapy procedure lasts up to 2 hours and is performed under general anesthesia. A small device, equipped with sensing and stimulation leads, will be placed under the skin of your chest. The sensing lead monitors your breathing, while the stimulation lead sends impulses to the tongue nerve.

The recovery time is minimal (2-3 days). Once inserted, the device will then be tested to ensure it works, and once confirmed, the procedure is done. The device is activated by the patient with a remote control four weeks after placement.

After the Procedure

After the Inspire device is successfully implanted, patients will return to our clinic for a follow-up appointment to activate the device. During this session, our team will ensure that the device is functioning properly and make necessary adjustments to optimize its performance. As patients continue to use Inspire, we provide periodic check-ups to monitor their progress and make any necessary adjustments to the device settings. We are committed to ensuring each patient receives individualized care to achieve the best possible outcomes with Inspire Therapy.

Inspire® FAQ's

  • The speed at which you may experience improvements in your sleep quality after treatment will depend on various factors, including the specific sleep disorder you have, the severity of your symptoms, and the treatment method used. For some sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, you may notice improvements in your sleep quality and daytime symptoms (such as fatigue and irritability) within a few days or weeks after starting treatment. For other sleep disorders, such as restless leg syndrome, it may take longer to see improvements in your symptoms after starting treatment. In some cases, medication may be necessary to manage symptoms, and it may take several weeks or months to find the right medication and dosage that works for you.
  • The device's batteries last about 10 years, and you'll need a follow-up procedure then. You might see immediate improvement, but full effects can take weeks or months. Most people experience significant symptom reduction, and some even eliminate sleep apnea.

After the procedure, rest for a few days, avoid strenuous activity for two weeks, and keep incisions clean. You'll return to normal activities in a few weeks. Regular follow-ups and sleep studies are needed to monitor your progress.

  • Inspire works inside your body with your natural breathing process to treat obstructive sleep apnea. While you sleep, Inspire delivers mild stimulation to key airway muscles, allowing the airway to remain open. The Inspire system is controlled by a small handheld sleep remote. You turn Inspire on before bed and off in the morning when you wake up.

  • Both treatments can be effective, but they work in different ways.

CPAP uses a mask and a machine to provide air pressure to keep the airway open during sleep. It's effective but can be uncomfortable and loud.

Inspire treats obstructive sleep apnea by using an implanted device to monitor breathing and stimulate the tongue, keeping the airway clear. It's ideal for people with moderate to severe OSA who cannot tolerate CPAP.

Both treatments work, and our team can help you choose the best one for you.

  • You should feel a mild sensation from the stimulation when the therapy is turned on. Typically, patients feel a tingling sensation or mild contraction in their tongue muscles. Then stimulation is delayed for a period of time while you fall asleep. After this start delay, stimulation resumes. The stimulation is gentle and designed to move the tongue forward without disturbing your sleep.

  • The first 4 to 6 weeks after the procedure the system remains off to allow you to heal. You’ll then have an appointment to have the system programmed with initial settings, receive the remote for your device and learn how to use it. You will then begin using Inspire every night, slowly increasing the amplitude until you reach the point where you are having comfortable restful sleep. After you've gotten used to using the device at home for about 12 weeks, you will have an overnight sleep study. At that time, the technician will observe your sleeping and fine-tune the device to the best possible way to treat your sleep apnea.
